EADS Astrium is responsible for the design, build and launch of 2 military hardened Skynet 5 military communications satellites, delivered in orbit.

- Support to legacy terminals
Skynet 5 communications service coverage will be enhanced through commercial augmentation:
- Global mobile - Iridium
- Satellite communications - Intelsat, Inmarsat
- Fibre - Cable & Wireless
Skynet 5 coverage availability can be enhanced through:
- Additional Paradigm launches driven by market demand
- Mutual back-up Memorandum of Understandings (MOUs)
- Capacity leased from other military satellite communications systems
