Paradigm Services demonstrates its milsatcom capabilities at JWID 02

Paradigm Services again participated in JWID (Joint Warrior Interoperability Demonstration), the forum for trialing and demonstrating new innovations in the military field. JWID 2002 was one of the mechanisms to be used to ensure that Paradigm will deliver effective and advanced Skynet 5 satellite communications services to military customers worldwide.

At JWID, Paradigm Services demonstrated two lightweight terminals, the Internet Protocol Terminal (IPT) Suitcase and the X-band FlyAway, which are suitable for remote users on out of area operations. JWID 2002 was used as an applied test bed for these terminals. The company has a proactive strategy for introducing the latest state-of-the-art technologies that seek to leverage new service opportunities by the rapid insertion of suitable commercial products into its catalogue. Iridium-based services are just one example of this highly successful approach.

Two services enabled by these and similar terminals are MediaLink and Paradigm's Internet welfare communications service currently being provided under Project WELCOME to troops on operational duty overseas. MediaLink is one of the many prospective service offerings in Paradigm's Skynet 5 Catalogue of Services. It has been developed to create a truly interactive, near real time environment within which Distributed Collaborative Planning (DCP) can be conducted during the planning, deployment, operational, sustainment and extraction phases of an exercise or active operation.

Paradigm Services has been managing Project WELCOME for over two years, with the welfare Internet communications facility being introduced last year, for both UK and overseas customers. This service is specifically focused on delivering high performance access to the web for field users via VSAT terminals. Paradigm will continue to exploit suitable commercial technology such as that featured at this year's JWID for future operations, and ensure that the service is incorporated into the overall theatre architecture. As an illustration, the IPT suitcase can also operate as a temporary Internet Service Provider (ISP) node to serve a number of remote sites.

Paradigm Services is a key player in the Paradigm Skynet 5 team. It is responsible for all aspects of Skynet 5 service delivery, together with network operations and maintenance. It is able to operate military information services in a multimedia environment and offers a highly flexible approach, allowing new service-based products and technological advancements to be fielded more rapidly.

Recently selected as preferred bidder for the UK MOD's Skynet 5 programme, the Paradigm team will provide secure satellite communications services initially through the transfer of ownership and operation of the existing Skynet 4 infrastructure and then to further enhance these services, by incorporating new Skynet 5 satellites and associated ground segment from the middle of this decade.

The Paradigm team, led by Paradigm Secure Communications, was formed by Astrium in 1999 to address the emerging military satellite communications services market. Paradigm Secure Communications has been selected as preferred bidder for Skynet 5 and will contract with Paradigm Services for full service delivery and Astrium for the Skynet 5 satellites and ground systems. Both Paradigm companies will become joint ventures between BAE SYSTEMS and EADS, European Aeronautic Defence and Space company.
